CASTRO HAS NOT RESIGNED

Contrary to popular belief Comrade Castro has not resigned from the Cooking Show. He is not ailing, nor have the Cubans in Miami invaded our cooking show to take it over and impose Batista-esque ideals into our kitchen. The only Bay of Pigs happening with us is how we challenge the large amount of wastefulness generated by Washington in the name of the war, and now... the diseased beef being fed to our children in public schools.

Cuban Sandwich Sin Carne

because many people in Cuba can't afford meat.
Sometimes the revolution costs, people.

for the process, I will write in the next blog, for part 2. Comrade Castro are I on our way to Ohio.

the passing of a warrior poet

It is a sad day here in nuestra cocina. We have lost a great elder, poet, warrior who inspired me during my days as a young chef in Tejas. He was one of our greatest poets who cooked con palabras. El jefe. El Mero Poeta, raúlrsalinas.

He passed Feb. 13, 2008 in his beloved Austen, Tejas. I will miss him; we all will miss him.

Here is a recipe for him for everyone to remember him by.

Te de Yerba Buena

A good tea happens with the steeping. And with Te de Yerba Buena, it requires heat to make the whole house fill with its goodness. As El Mero raúl called it, it's medicine.

Find some good yerba buena. Heat up some water good to boiling, and place the yerba buena inside, let it steep for awhile (make sure to put the yerba buena does not get wet; you can use a bag or something else to keep it from getting wet). Let the aroma of the Yerba Buena roll through you. Take it in, take it in. And before you partake, remember warrior poet raulrsalinas, who was activista, poeta, community leader. Think of jazz, pintas, political struggles, y tacos. Yes, tacos. And you will only have just a glimpse of the man. Because all we have sometimes, when our elders pass to the other side, is our memories.

So please make some memories with your elders. Eat dinner with them tonight or share some tea with them.

This tea is good with honey tambien, pero sometimes it's just good straight just before or after a meal, when you need to center yourself after a long day and just heal, gente. Just heal.

VOTE! With Your Stomach!

Vote with your Stomach
by Mero Cocinero Karimi

Good people,

Many of you have written me asking me who am I voting for this year. Am I voting for change? Am I voting for the War? No, no, no, I respond. There may be 3 Os in Mero Cocinero, but that doesn’t mean I am for Obama, and just because Mrs. Clinton speaks better Spanish, doesn’t mean I am voting for her. Where do I turn when I need to make an important political decision such as this?

My stomach.

Yes, my stomach.

Today, on this super Tuesday.

Vote!

With your stomach!

You heard me. Vote with your stomach.

People are using religion, gender, or race to decide whom they vote for today. But I respond with the ancient international word for “I don’t want to date you, you’re in my face!” NO! That’s what the corporate masses want you to do, they want you to think about the outside of a candidate. I say, look in.

Think, about food!

Yes, You can do it! Si se puede!

Think about

who is against the farm bill that oversubsidizes corn.

which candidate will just go with the crowd after a great disaster, raise their hand and say “Let’s kill Cows! Let’s kill Sheep!”

who understands that life is scared, and that you can’t kill anything without understanding that first.

who you would like to have dinner with. That’s right: think of your favorite food. And think about which candidate you could have over for dinner, and then that President could go out and then tell the Republicans that there will be no compromise when it comes to raising the defense budget.

who would leave a child behind, so they could get a good breakfast before they go to school

who understands that War and diabetes have been taking the lives of people of diverse populations, and that person will stand up to the Republicans, who only want to sugarcoat a war that sickens the stomach.

That why you must vote! With your stomach!

Diversity of the palate and the politics is the best way to go.

And to help you on your journey to the polls, I have a light recipe we cooked for the good people of Iowa to help them with their caucuses earlier this year. It’s light, so you can go and vote!!!!! A heavy stomach tends to forget it was hungry, and votes for kickbacks to the rich! cuidate!

(If you already voted, it’s ok. No worries. No preocupes.

Still make a good meal with people you love, talk about politics. Caucus con your cousins and your neighbors. )

This recipe was handed down by my family in a book in our library of recipes. You need a talisman of transformation to do this recipe, but if you don’t have one, a blender will do.

And remember, vote with your stomach!!

In solidarity,
Mero Cocinero
