About the show:
An episode of The Cooking Show con
Karimi y Comrades focusing on
Type 2 Diabetes.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) names Type 2
Diabetes as one of the leading causes of death in communities of color,
and the rates of this disease are skyrocketing daily. Doctors and
scientists have devised multiple strategies to prevent and even to
reverse this disease, but the solutions are neither accessible nor
palatable to the people who need them most.
Diabetes of Democracy will be
an interdisciplinary theatrical
experience, incorporating music, documentary-style video, storytelling,
political discussion and humor – as well as live cooking onstage – in a
PBS cooking show format. It is essential that the show be a
participatory experience for the audience, and members will help
prepare the meal, take a sensory journey, and taste all of the recipes.
This project will have 2-3 week residencies in 6 communities. There
will be 6-7 performances and other activities which will include the
following:
Our audience is essential to this performance – and it has the
potential to change them.
We are currently developing the show; going to towns, and finding the
recipes and the stories and writing the new episodes.
